P3 Day 4 of 25 - Thursday September 22, 2011 – Pompeii / Sorrentine Traditions

Day 4: Explore Pompeii / Sorrentine Traditions

Breakfast: Buffet breakfast at hotel

Morning: Guided visit of Pompeii archaeological site. Wander the streets of the city frozen in time in August of 79 CE (AD). Walk into the amphitheater, see where the gladiators trained, walk down Via Abbondanza, the main street, observe 1st century political grafitti. Notice the similarities between Pompeii where bars, restaurants, shops and bakeries line the streets, and that in any modern city in Italy.

Our guide - the maestro - is Claudio.  He was with us many days providing an extraordinary amount of information.  I was lucky enough to capture what I could with audio recording, photos and video.  His knowledge of art, history, archeology, religion and much more was astounding, as well as outstanding.  We were fortunate to learn much from what he shared.  I think if time allowed, there was still much to learn.

He gave me the nickname - Fellini, after the famous Italian film director, Federico Fellini.  I was thrilled to be able to "do my thing!"

Lunch: Lunch at a local Ristorante Vesuvio.

http://www.pompeiisites.org/Sezione.jsp?idSezione=2194  Try the Google map N-North pointer and rotate to get a 360 view.  Also try clicking on the white color “V” that show up on the roadway to move along the path.  Then do another 360 turn.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pompeii  Many of the wiki articles are a good start to get basic information. I like to think of it as – unbiased biases.  Many inputs with a reasonable effort to make sure if additional citations needed, that information is posted.

With all that said and referenced – there still is the thrill of seeing all this up close.  Whether I read 20 or 200 pages of prior information, the actual experience always seemed to still conjure the thought – maybe I need to “again” read the information to more fully appreciate the beauty and importance of what I am having the “adventure in learning.”   The central focus of the design of the tours.
